| This session on "new directions in water quality and health" includes presentations on: assessments of water source vulnerability to microbiological, chemical and radiological contaminants; research to determine the sources, transport, transformations, and fate of water contaminants; monitoring the spatial and temporal distribution of water contaminants; and an investigation of the public health impact of microbiological contaminants in recreational waters. The session will emphasize the importance of collaborative efforts, and features recent work of the U.S. Geological Survey (the nation's prinicipal earth sciences agency), conducted in cooperation with public health and environmental protection agencies at the federal, state, tribal, and local government levels. The session also includes a presentation of joint work between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local and state public health agencies. | ||||
