Oral Session

"Centering" the Workforce Around Public Health

The need for a coordinated national approach to public health workforce development has been discussed for over a decade since the IOM report. Although there have been many individual successes, the gap remains wide between needs of front line staff and opportunities to acquire competencies that will enhance staff capacity to maintain preparedness for practice. Recently, national federal plans and new funds for workforce development are providing rich opportunities for academic centers, the practice community and federal agencies to join forces to train working professionals in public health while addressing scholarship and excellence in practice-based curricula and research. In this session, HRSA Public Health Training Centers and CDC-funded Centers for Public Health Preparedness representatives will share how these centers as a whole are addressing local/regional workforce needs while contributing to improved coordination at the national level.

Learning Objectives: 1- Describe key elements of national plans for public health workforce development. 2- Describe evolving crosscutting models within the pool of both CDC-Centers for Public Health Preparedness and HRSA-Public Health Training Centers and show how they are making unique contributions at the local/regional level while enhancing progress towards national public health workforce development goals. 3- Discuss how academic center-based practice-oriented research, in collaboration with practice partners, is vital for building future workforce development strategies to augment local public health system performance and improve infrastructure. 4- Illustrate how training that is backed up by applied research can define new directions for public health practice.
