Developing Quality Public Health Materials: Examples and Advice from the Section Award Winners

Public health materials often are central components in health education, promotion, and communication interventions. However, it is extremely challenging to develop and disseminate high-quality, innovative materials that are informed by formative research and psychosocial theory, appropriate in content and purpose for the intended target audience, and appropriately evaluated both formatively and summatively. In order to promote high-quality materials, and to recognize the professionals who create them, the Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section of the American Public Health Association conducts an annual Public Health Materials Contest. Entries are reviewed by expert judges in four categories: print materials, promotional materials, audio/video materials, and electronic materials. This session will feature the award winners from this year's contest who will present their winning material and discuss its development, share lessons and experiences about developing materials, and participate in discussion with the other presenters and the audience.
See individual abstracts for presenting author's disclosure statement.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participants will be able to: (1) Describe the importance of high-quality materials in public health interventions; (2) Identify important aspects of developing and evaluating high-quality materials; and, (3) Apply lessons learned from the award winning materials and their creators to one's own public health research and practice.
