Infectious Diseases: New Issues, New Approaches

Infectious diseases have become new news - with the general public, politicians, public health workers alike recognizing the need to address the reality of emergence and re-emergence of old and new diseases. Detecting and controlling infectious diseases, especially emerging and re-emerging diseases, requires revitalization of old approaches, as well as invention of new ways to address the situation. Some of these approaches include environmental health engineering, community organization and development to implement interventions requiring broad compliance, education of populations in the use of environmental and personal control measures, building of new coalitions between the health and other sectors (environment, agriculture, industry, others) and strengthening of health systems (services, financing, and information systems). This panel will address these approaches from the point of view of several disciplines and will provide a forum for debate of the most effective and cost-effective approaches to controlling further emergence and spread of infectious diseases in the 21st century.
