Panel Discussion Session

Development of the Redes En Acción Network:

The Redes En Accion Network is organized under the Nation Cancer Institute's Special Populations Network Branch with the goal of 1) increasing the quality and quantity of Hispanics involved in cancer research and training and 2) increasing awareness of cancer prevention and control among Hispanic populations in the US. The Redes En Accion Network is built on existing partnerships which provides multilevel participation among its members. Its members have successful research and academic track records and it is one of the first research networks designed to embrace the major Hispanic populations in the US (Cubans, Central Americans, South Americans, Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans). Over the 5 years of activity, plans call for 10-week mini-sabbaticals for 20 junior scientists, recruiting and placing at least 30 pre-doctoral and postdoctoral trainees, and providing support and mentoring for 20 undergraduate student interns. Evaluation will be carried out through network process tracking, assessments of research products, analysis of indicators of career advancement and various studies of education or advocacy outcomes related to priority topics. With annual reviews and adjustments of priorities, the network will serve as an ongoing vehicle for involving diverse Hispanic populations in a comprehensive range of cancer awareness, training and research activities. The panelists will provide a detailed overview of the Redes En Accion project combined with perspectives on several issues that are high prioity areas of the Redes En Accion research agenda.
See individual abstracts for presenting author's disclosure statement.
