Lead and Allergens in the Indoor Environment

The National Survey of Lead and Allergens in Housing (NSLAH I) was recently conducted under the sponsorship of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS/NIH) to assess children’s potential household exposure to lead and indoor allergens. The lead component of the survey provides current estimates of lead levels in dust, soil and paint in the U.S. housing stock, and updates and expands on information from the 1990 National Survey of Lead in Housing. The allergen portion of the survey describes the prevalence and distribution of various indoor allergens (including those that derive from dust mites, cockroaches, dogs, cats, rats, mice, and molds) and bacterial endotoxins in the U.S. housing stock and is the first national survey to assess exposure to these agents. Both the National Lead Survey and the National Allergen Survey components of the overall survey will identify demographic, housing and behavioral factors associated with high levels of exposure to these agents. In addition, the National Allergen Survey will examine the complex relationship between exposure to indoor allergens/endotoxins and the prevalence and severity of asthma and allergies.
See individual abstracts for presenting author's disclosure statement.
Learning Objectives: Individuals attending this session will learn about the design and methodology used to conduct the National Survey of Lead and Allergens in Housing (NSLAH I), statistical issues associated with analysis of the complex dataset, prevalence of household exposure to lead, allergens and endotoxins in the U.S., and factors related to exposure to these agents. Individuals will also learn about implementation of a new lead-based paint poisoning prevention program.
