| Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is being used across the country to effectively address environmental threats to health. This panel presents various CBPR environmental research projects. The first three papers presented will describe the the Community Action Against Asthma (CAAA) project of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/Environmental Protection Agency funded Michigan Center for the Environment and Children's Health (MCECH). CAAA is a CBPR partnership involving community-based organizations, health agencies and universities focusing on childhood asthma in Detroit and the three CAAA papers will focus on: the household intervention design, implementation and interim evaluation results; the assessment of household exposures, health status and quality of life among asthmatic children; and assessments of personal exposure to particulate matter. The fourth paper describes the nationwide development of youth environmental health education programs coordinated by the Institute for Children's Environmental Health and details how youth develop and implement effective environmental health projects. The fifth paper focuses on CBPR work in Greenpoint/Willamsburg, Brooklyn and describes how multiple groups in one community are participating in CBPR and how different forms of local knowledge are essential for understanding public health enviromental hazards. | ||||

| Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this panel, participants will be able to: 1)Describe key principles of community-based participatory research in environmental health. 2)Discuss the utility of a CBPR approach in researching different environmental health issues. 3) Describe examples of local knowledge that communities offer for understanding local public health environmental hazards. 4) Articulate the necessary components for developing a community-based participatory research environmental health program, including youth environmental health programs. | ||||
