The Vision of the Community-Based Public Health Caucus The Community-Based Public Health Caucus is guided by the belief that community lies at the heart of public health, and that interventions work best when they are rooted in the values, knowledge, expertise, and interests of the community itself. We believe that health encompasses the physical, mental, spiritual, environmental and economic well being of a community and its members. We recognize the power of equal partnerships including community-based organizations, academic institutions, and health agencies, addressing health issues of the community. We understand that in order for these partnerships to be equal and for interventions to be community-based, community members must participate fully in the identification of health issues and the selection, design, implementation and evaluation of programs that address them. It is this vision that we express in the term “Community-Based Public Health.” We invite abstracts that reflect a diversity of Community-Based Public Health activities, including both basic and applied research projects, interventions, and teaching and service learning projects. Of particular interest are proposals for presentations and sessions that will provide participants with enhanced knowledge and skills with regard to the process of conducting Community Based Public Health activities. All abstracts should be submitted to one of the six general topic areas listed below:
We also invite submissions of proposals for full sessions (90 minutes in length). In addition to the submission of an individual abstract for each of the 3-4 papers to be included in a session, a one-page overview of the proposed session must be submitted directly to the planner via e-mail at Scott_Rhodes@unc.edu. This one-page overview should include: 1) the session title, 2) the name of the lead facilitator and the contact person for the session, 3) a brief overview of the rationale for the session, and 4) a list (in presentation order) of the individual abstracts to be organized into this session, complete with titles, authors, and time allocated for each presentation and any discussion periods. Also please indicate whether you would like to have the individual abstracts considered for presentation in other sessions if your session proposal is not accepted. Please note that each individual abstract to be included in a session must be submitted through the APHA electronic abstract submission process. In the “comments to organizers” box for each abstract submission, the authors should indicate that the abstract is to be considered as part of the proposed session (indicated by session title). Deadline for all abstract submissions is Thursday, February 7, 2002. |
