Mental Health

Submit Abstract

The theme for the APHA meeting for 2002 is “Putting the Public Back into Public Health”. The Mental Health Section welcomes submissions related to this topic as it pertains to mental health issues. The Section also welcomes paper, poster, and panel proposals on all topics, but we are especially interested in the following areas:
  • Building consensus on use of outcomes and quality improvement assessment techniques
  • Capacity of public mental health systems in responding to mass crises
  • Effectiveness of public mental health systems
  • Future role of prevention research and interventions
  • Implementation and dissemination of research findings
  • Mental health issues of special populations including people who are homeless, children and adolescents, aging adults, and minorities
The Mental Health Section accepts submissions suitable for presentation as papers, posters, and roundtable discussions. All submissions will be selected through a rated review process according to relevance, timeliness, methodology, and overall quality. Priority will be given to proposals that when presented at APHA will include research findings. Abstracts for all papers, including special submissions below, should be submitted through APHA’s normal web solicitation process NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 6.

Special submissions:

Applicants wishing to be considered for the Bruno Lima Symposium on mental health issues affecting minority populations should declare their interest in a letter to the section program planner, including a copy of the abstract submitted through APHA’s web solicitation process. These submissions will be juried separately and five (5) papers will be selected.

A new juried award will be given for the best student paper in the field of mental health. The three finalists will be invited to present their papers at the Atlanta 2002 meeting and will each receive an award to cover the cost of APHA conference registration fee. To be eligible students must be a member of the APHA mental health section and enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program as of February 6, 2001, the application deadline. Submitted papers may be no longer than 10 double-spaced pages plus 5 tables and references. Full papers should be sent to Mary E. Evans, Ph.D., College of Nursing, MDC 22, University of South Florida, 12901 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa, FL 33612 or submitted electronically to mevans@hsc.usf.edu.
