Abstract #33554

Individual, Peer, and Familial Predictors of Drug Abuse Among School-Based Youth in Mexico

William W. Latimer, PhD, MPH, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, 642 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21205, 410-955-3960, wlatimer@jhsph.edu and Marco Vazquez, University of Minnesota, 150 Pillsbury Drive, Minneapolis, MN 55455.

There is little research examining drug abuse risk factors among Mexican youth despite high rates of alcohol use that are comparable to rates in the United States. This presentation will focus on data derived from the International Study of Adolescent Health and Problem Behavior. The survey has a general orientation to adolescent health and problem behavior, but this presentation will focus on items on individual (e.g., deviant behavior), peer (e.g., peer drug use), and familial (e.g., parental and sibling drug use) risk factors of adolescent drug use and abuse. Data from school-based youth in Mexico (N=1057) in grades 7 though 12 are currently being analyzed. A series of logistic and linear regression models will examine associations between risk factors and adolescent drug use/abuse status. Initial findings suggest that adolescent drug abuse is associated with peer and sibling substance use but not parental substance use. The examination of drug abuse risk factors in countries other than the U.S.A. have the potential to provide unique insights on the underlying nature of drug abuse among adolescents that cannot be obtained from studies of U.S. youths alone. The significance of the findings to drug abuse prevention and treatment efforts will be discussed.
