Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of physical violence (PV), intimate partner violence (IPV), and emotional abuse among adult American Indian men and women in the past year. Methods: A random sample of Montana Indian households on or near the seven reservations was contacted via an adapted Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey in 2001 (N=1,006). Physical violence and IPV were defined as physical violence committed by any person, or by a current or former spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend or date, respectively. Emotional abuse was defined as fear for one’s safety or being controlled by another individual. Results: Nine percent of men reported experiencing PV in the past year, 1% reported IPV, and 18% reported PV or emotional abuse. Six percent of women reported PV in the past year, 3% reported IPV, and 20% reported PV or emotional abuse. Men who reported experiencing PV in the past year were more likely to be younger, and report >1 days of physical and mental health problems in the past month. Women who reported experiencing PV in the past year were more likely to be younger, have less than 12 years of education, and have >1 days with mental health problems in the past month. Conclusions: Recent PV, IPV, and emotional abuse are common for both American Indian men and women.
