Alpha1-Antitrypsin Deficiency (AAT) is the most prevalent potentially life threatening hereditary disorder of Caucasians in America. Frequently misdiagnosed or undetected AAT can lead to early onset emphysema in younger adults and liver disease in children and adults. The disabilities of persons with AAT (hereafter referred to as “Alphas”) are often not apparent to observers. AlphaNet, a non-profit health management company established “By Alphas to Serve Alphas,” has developed a comprehensive program to enhance the quality of Alphas’ lives. In this paper we focus on the sexuality component of this program and discuss the importance of addressing sexuality issues in AAT and how the AlphaNet self-management program does this.
