Abstract #35416

Designing the future of public health in Missouri

Mahree Fuller Skala, MA, Kathleen A. Wojciehowski, JD, MA, and Judy Alexiou, MPH. Center for Local Public Health Services, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, P.O. Box 570, 912 Wildwood Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0570

Managed care and Medicaid reimbursement restructuring caused the governmental portion of the Missouri public health system to reconsider public health and its role in the community. In 1999, the Missouri Model Agency Project, funded in part by Robert Wood Johnson and Turning Point, was one vehicle chosen for this self-examination. This two- year planning effort of seven local agencies and the state agency resulted in an agency blueprint with ten components(see diagram). The partnership, involving 120 people, researched and recorded best practices to design the model. Results are impressive. Agencies are peer mentoring; LEPCs are using the emergency preparedness findings in their planning activities; and the report is on the WEB, to name a few. Now, MOMAP participants are leading a statewide initiative, the Missouri Institute for Community Health, to strengthen the public health workforce and support communities in making health decisions for today and tomorrow’s challenges. Representatives from the community, the private sector, higher education, and the healthcare industry along with state and local agencies are part of this next step.
