Abstract #35633

Global tobacco control: Prospects for success

Judith Wilkenfeld, JD, Framework Convention Initiative, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, 1400 I Street NW, Suite 1200, Washington, DC 20005, 202 296-5469, jwilkenfeld@tobaccofreekids.org

The participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) as educators, advocates, and partners in the policy development process is continuously evolving. Their activities affect delegates, the treaty secretariat, and the activities of other NGOs, as well as media and public opinion. Using qualitative methodology, this paper examines NGO involvement in the process from the perspective of governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the NGOs themselves.
