The project investigates the attitudes and perceptions of Program Directors in Health Administration regarding online and distance education. First, results of a national survey and other relevant literature are reviewed. The survey was sent to all Program Directors of Member Programs of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). In a second step, in-depth follow up interviews with selected program directors were made to gain further insight. The results of the phone interviews showed the complexity of the process and provided an in-depth look at the issues needed to develop a successful online Program. Issues of (1.) Needs Assessment, (2.) Organizational Leadership and Structure, (3.) Faculty, administration and student attitudes, (4.) Workload and Staffing, (5.) Infrastructure and support services needed, and (6.) Roadblocks in building and implementing online/distance education are addressed and presented. Examples on how to address these issues are discussed including institutional policy changes, new job descriptions, strategic planning activities, working of ad-hoc faculty and administrative committees and proposed organizational and infrastructure changes. The presentation will provide valuable information for planning and implementing online/distance education programs in Health Administration and allied health fields. Key results of a survey and phone interviews will be presented during the session and an interactive discussion with attendees will be encouraged.
