Consumer satisfaction is a universal value in the delivery of health care services. Advances in the way health care is organized, financed and delivered must be balanced with the ability to fulfill the needs, expectations and desires of patients and their families. Patient and caregiver measures of satisfaction are, therefore, major outcomes in evaluating the viability and acceptability of innovative approaches to health care. Consumer-directed care has emerged in the last decade as a model that offers consumers greater choice and control over in-home services they receive as a result of physical and/or cognitive impairment. This study presents findings from a randomized controlled trial of consumer-directed care conducted in parts of West Virginia, Ohio and New York with an impaired group of 1609 Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. Results will be presented on the relationship between consumer-directed care empowerment strategies and satisfaction with: 1) in-home consumer-directed care services; 2) control over health care decision-making; 3) physician services; 4) Medicare home health; and 5) family relationships.
