The goal of this research and development project was to create, evaluate, and disseminate multimedia nutrition software allowing active participation in learning about nutrition for 10 to 15 year-olds. An interactive computer simulation was employed to improve age appropriate nutritional knowledge, and application of food choice skills. The simulation portrays a Martian colony using animation, voice-over narration, music, and sound effects. A demonstration of the software will be shown. We conducted two levels of evaluation; process measures using focus group discussions during software development, and outcomes assessment in a randomized trial of the intervention. The outcome evaluation had one non-intervention comparison group, and three treatment groups: a teacher-led group, a computer-only group, and a teacher plus computer group (n=209). Pre- to post-treatment changes were measured through questionnaires for: 1) knowledge about the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and the FDA Nutrition Facts Label; and 2) skill in application of the Food Guide Pyramid and the Nutrition Facts Label to balancing daily food choices, including increased daily intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, and dietary fiber, and decreased daily intake of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar, and; 3) demonstration of skills in nutritional planning using the USDA Healthy Eating Index. Research and development was funded by National Cancer Institute SBIR grants, numbers R43CA78092 and R44CA78092.
