This project examines the theoretical framework associated with The Risk Reduction Project. The theories that are utilized are The Theory of Reasoned Action and Social-Cognitive Theory. The theories are examined in the context of a Factor Analysis to determine if expected variables will cluster together. The second purpose of this project was to determine the predictive power of the factors in a discriminant analysis. The final purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Risk Reduction Project. An evaluation of whether or not the intervention worked will be conducted. One hundred fifty-two participants ages 12-19 (M=14.5) were recruited to participate in the program. One hundred twenty-nine participants completed the pre-test, post-test and 3-month follow-up surveys. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups and were stratified by age. Participants completed a 5-hour session to receive training on HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS and substance use or health education. After conducting a principal component factor analysis factor scores were assigned for each subject and used in a discriminant analysis to determine which of the factors would predict sexual activity. Univariate ANOVA’s suggest that there was a difference among the grouping variables for negative beliefs regarding sexual behavior (F=69.652, p < .001) and negative attitudes regarding condom use (F=10.63, p < .001). This suggests that these predictors discriminated between sexually active and abstinent participants. Presentation of this work will outline the above findings as well as an evaluation section determining the effectiveness of the program.
