Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide formative research for planning tobacco control efforts within the Vietnamese Community of Louisiana. Background: Smoking is responsible for 87% of the lung cancer deaths in the United States. In 1993, the leading cause of cancer death (22.3%) among Asian Americans was lung cancer. In Vietnam, approximately 73% of men smoke. Over half of the Southeast Asians immigrating to the United States since 1975 were from Vietnam. It is reported that the U.S. Vietnamese will reach four million by 2030. There are approximately 24,358 Vietnamese in Louisiana. Currently, there are limited studies addressing the Vietnamese population and tobacco usage, none in Louisiana. Methods: This study uses a combination of qualitative research methods to profile the perceived importance of tobacco use in the Vietnamese community of Louisiana and to rank the issues in comparison to other health problems. 1. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with key community leaders. During the interviews, subjects were asked to freelist several topics. 2. Three confirmatory focus groups were conducted with Vietnamese community members to augment the information from the interviews. During focus groups, community members also pile sorted the freelists. 3. Using multi-dimensional scaling (AnthroPac 4.0), a map of the related issues was produced, providing the State Office of Public Health Tobacco Control Program a set of relationships, rankings, and background information with which to develop interventions. Based on the results of our study, we will discuss recommendations on implementing an anti-tobacco program within the Vietnamese community.
