IUD acceptance rate in Cambodia is very low. Most family planning clients start oral contraceptives or injectables. Both methods show a high discontinuation rate after one year although contraceptive needs are high especially for birth limiting and long term use. Therefore, RACHA supported the ministry of Health in improving acceptance rates by re-introducing IUD in six selected centers in rural Cambodia. This program encompasses following steps:
- Needs assessment for training and equipment - Training of coaches - Theory and competency-based practice for the service providers in IUD insertion and infection prevention - Information campaign in the health center catchment area - Whole site training of health center staff - Supportive supervision - Group discussions with potential and satisfied clients - Free services during a 6-month period - Evaluation by questionnaires
All six health centers show a dramatic increase in the number of clients for IUD insertion. Data analysis indicates the importance of the training and the confidence the service provider should have to provide adequate counseling and method choices Also services costs remain a key factor for poor people in rural Cambodia.
