Dabney P Evans, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, 1525 Clifton Road, Office 108, Atlanta, GA 30322, 404-727-3061, devan01@sph.emory.edu and Kathleen R. Miner, PhD, MPH, CHES, School of Public Health, Emory University, 1518 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329-4218.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers, in American men (ACS, CDC); and it is the most common cancer-related death among American men after lung cancer (ACS, CDC). Because of the profound effect prostate cancer has on the lives of men in Georgia, staff at the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University were contracted to perform various activities that focus on the development of a comprehensive statewide health message about prostate cancer control and training of health professionals about this message. The major activities of the project were interviews with key stakeholders, focus groups with prostate cancer survivors and public health professionals, and the development and implementation of a training on Prostate Cancer for public health practitioners. Results of the interviews and focus groups indicated training needs including risk factors for prostate cancer, symptoms, resources for patients, screening options and treatment guidelines. Subsequent to the interviews and focus groups a prostate cancer curriculum was developed for public health professionals. The curriculum aimed to provide introductory level knowledge about prostate cancer for public health professionals. Topics included in the curriculum were anatomy of the prostate, the health impact of prostate cancer, risk factors of prostate cancer, methods used to diagnose prostate cancer, prostate cancer treatments and treatment side effects, resources for health education and support services, and current policies regarding prostate cancer. This session will describe the results of the interviews, and focus groups, the development of the prostate cancer curriculum and its subsequent implementation.
