Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine dietary intake behaviors and dietary practices in 9th-12th graders in South Carolina. Methods: YRBS was developed measure the extent to which adolescents engage in health risk and health enhancing behaviors. The 1999 SC instrument assessed the 6 priority health-risk behaviors that result in the greatest amount of premature morbidity and mortality and social problems among youth. SAS (6.08) was used to perform statistical analyses. Results: 20.1% of BF and 22.3% of BMs reported no fruit intake in the past 7 days and 52.1% of BF and 59.9% of BMs reported no green salad intake in the past 7 days. 46.2% of BF and 43.7% of BM reported no potato intake in the past 7 days. 36.9% of BF and 23.7% of BMs reported no milk intake in the past 7 days. 39.2% of WM reported no green salad consumption in the past 7 days and 26.9% of WF and 28.6% of WM reported no potato intake in the past 7 days. 21.6% of WF reported no intake of milk in the past 7 days while only 12.6% of WM reported no intake of milk in the past 7 days. Conclusion: Dietary intake of fruit, green salad, potatoes, milk, and other foods declines as students’ age and progress from 9th to 12th grades. SC adolescents are consuming diets associated with increased risk for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, CVD, arthritis, and cancer.
