Purpose: An essential component of a healthy lifestyle is regular PA. However, millions of American children and adolescents remain sedentary. The purpose of this study is to examine PA behaviors and practices in 9th-12th graders in South Carolina. Methods: YRBS was developed measure the extent to which adolescents engage in health risk and health enhancing behaviors. The 1999 SC instrument assessed the 6 priority health-risk behaviors that result in the greatest amount of premature morbidity and mortality and social problems among youth. SAS (6.08) was used to perform statistical analyses. Results: More BM than BF engaged in PA for at least 20 minutes/day, exercised to strengthen and tone, participated in PE, and played on more sports teams in the last 12 months. More WM than WF engaged in PA for at least 30 minutes/day, exercised to strengthen and tone, participated in PE, spent longer exercising or playing sports in PE, and played on more sports teams in the last 12 months. WM participated in more PA followed by BM, WF, and BF. 9th and 10th graders participated in the most PA followed by 11th and 12th graders. Conclusion: Involvement in PA, exercising to strengthen and tone, participation in PE, and playing on sports teams declines as students progress from 9th to 12th grades. SC adolescents are not engaging in adequate amounts of PA, which increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, CVD, arthritis, and cancer. Learning Objectives: Participants will understand PA behaviors of South Carolina adolescents (Grade 9-12).
