The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2000) found that 15% of sexually active youth's engage in unprotected sex, despite the efforts of the public health community to encourage teens to use contraception. Current research indicates that the mass media, and in particular movies, are substantial sources of information about sexuality for youth. However, the research community has not recently looked at the kinds of messages teens receive about using (or not using) contraception from movies. To address this lack of knowledge, a content analysis of 11 'teen' movies was performed to explore the number of times contraception was used, talked about, or otherwise referenced within these movies. A qualitative analysis was also performed to further examine the meaning of these messages. Findings from this analysis will be discussed in this session.
