Every community member makes pollution prevention and exposure reduction choices that impact health. It is especially important to instill a sense of environmental health stewardship in our youth so that, in the future, environmental and health policies will be made based on a sound understanding of environmental health sciences.
The NIEHS Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health’s Community Outreach and Education Program (COEP) is focused on education projects that improve student awareness and understanding of environmental health and safety issues. The interdisciplinary nature of environmental health concepts encourages critical civic and scientific thinking in students who, in turn, can empower their communities.
The COEP’s collaborations with the K-12 community in Washington State include teacher trainings, classroom visits by public health professionals as well as toxicology laboratory tours and student videoconference presentations. This session will focus on our experiences in engaging youth in environmental health programs using community resources, hands-on activities and technology.
