Abstract #39469

RADICAL: Real Actions Directed to Improving Children’s Health and Lifestyle

Nancy L. Rothman, EdD, RN, Department of Nursing, CAHP, Temple University, 3307 N. Broad Street 602-00, Philadelphia, PA 19140, 215-707-5436, nrothman@vm.temple.edu

Building on the belief that the best educators for youth are other youth, RADICAL Youth will train and empower Philadelphia’s children to educate their peers about environmental health problems that adversely effect their communities. Their training will include lead poisoning prevention, asthma and environmental tobacco smoke and how to bring awareness to other youth. The goal of RADICAL is to engage youth in directly addressing environmental health issues in their community-based after-school programs. The outcome will be a youth related environmental health curriculum that can be used as a national model in after-school programs around the country.
