Web-based intervention for youth smoking prevention and cessation

The Internet offers innovative solutions for engaging youth in smoking prevention and cessation For example, the TeenNet Project (lead by Harvey Skinner, Department of Public Health Sciences) has worked with youth to create The Smoking Zine (http://www.smokingzine.org), an interactive web-based intervention to address youth tobacco use. Based in part on Social Cognitive Theory and the Transtheoretical Model, The Smoking Zine incorporates games, self-assessment tools and connectivity features to provide a resource that allows both smokers and non-smokers to make healthy decisions about using tobacco. initial results of a randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact of The Smoking Zine on smoking rates with youth are presented and discussed in light of the emerging trend towards using the Internet as a medium for tobacco promotion, prevention and control. Implications for using the Internet as a medium for health promotion with youth are also presented.
