Abstract #39756

ATECAR: A culturally appropriate comprehensive tobacco and cancer control research and training program among Asian communities

Grace X. Ma, PhD, Department of Health Studies, Temple University, 304A Vivacqua Hall, P.O. Box 2843, Philadelphia, PA 19122, 215-204-5108, xma00000@nimbus.temple.edu

Funded by the National Cancer Institute, ATECAR (Asian Tobacco Education, Cancer Awareness & Research) is the first long-term federal effort on tobacco and cancer control targeting on the multi-ethnic Asian American communities in the Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and a collaborative endeavor between the lead institution, Temple University, other research institutions, and Asian community organization partners. ATECAR’s ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable public health infrastructure and strategic partnership to foster comprehensive tobacco and cancer control through research, training, and education focused on Asian Americans. Research, capacity building, community intervention training and education are key components of ATECAR. A comprehensive needs assessment survey, and the consequential development of a series of culturally appropriate tobacco and cancer control programs for Asian youth and adults, are major achievements of ATECAR network. To build community capacity, ATECAR established a regional network of Asian community organizations (the first Asian Community Cancer Coalition Community in the Delaware valley region) to bridge Asian communities, research and training institutions, and governmental entities. ATECAR’s community activities include media campaign, mini-grants, and tobacco education skill training, among others. Research, training and education opportunities are provided for Asian junior researchers, Asian community partners and professionals. This project is of great significance because it responds to the urgent needs of developing culturally appropriate tobacco and cancer control programs for Asian Americans, the fast growing, diverse, while underserved population. ATECAR will present its innovative efforts on these four tracks.
