The purpose of this feasibility study was to develop and evaluate Asian-youth Choosing Tobacco-free (ACT), a culturally appropriate smoking cessation program for Asian American youth.  This curriculum was developed and culturally tailored for Asian youth based on the American Lung Association’s Not on Tobacco (N-O-T) smoking cessation curriculum.  Strategies and stages of curriculum development and testing included:  1) Identification of cultural themes/relevant factors through literature review, focus groups with teachers, parents and Asian youth smokers to determine cultural themes, 2) Incorporation of cultural themes into curriculum activities, discussions and instruments, 3) Implementation and pilot test of culturally adapted curriculum, and 4) Impact and ongoing formative evaluation of program.  Focus group participants and Asian American youth smokers for the study were recruited from Asian community-based organizations and after-school programs serving Asian youth in the Greater Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. Efficacy of the curriculum is determined by a pre test, post test and 3 month follow up design measuring knowledge, attitudes, tobacco use reduction, cessation and quit attempts. Evaluation results for the ACT curriculum will include quit and reduction rates from a comparison group, standard group and culturally adapted group.  Cultural modification themes/strategies and preliminary results of the study will be presented.
