Community collaboration improves the capacity of county Maternal and Child Health programs to deliver successful injury prevention projects. Five counties that received California state grant funding to strengthen childhood injury prevention initiatives are attempting a variety of efforts to engage stakeholders and respond to their communities' injury prevention needs. The Center for Injury Prevention Policy and Practice (CIPPP) provides technical assistance to each of the five MCH Grantees. To facilitate this effort, the CIPPP developed a tool, the Technical Assistance Diagnostic of Key Activities, to allow each grantee to assess current organizational and community capacities as they relate to data collection, environmental analysis, key stakeholder involvement, effective intervention selection and evaluation activities. Upon reviewing Diagnostic findings, the overarching commonality among the grantees was recognition of the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders and capacity building at the local level. Each county is guiding its progress through each stage of program development using innovative and extensive coalitions. This report will describe that progress, identify problems encountered, explain how barriers were overcome, and discuss the Technical Assistance Diagnostic as a tool for building local capacity.
