Backpack safety for kids: A creative curriculum

Despite the fact that there is concern among parents, schools, and health personnel that children are carrying too much weight in their backpacks and not using them properly, there is a lack of research and programs focused on the problem. This presentation will address the topic of improper backpack use among school aged children. The presenter will provide information on the risks of incorrect backpack use, the prevalence of such use, and solutions to the problem. An overview will be given of a curriculum designed by All Children’s Hospital to educate school-aged children on how to use their backpacks the right way to avoid injury. This curriculum uses music, video, and demonstrations in order to reinforce the safe backpack message. This program illustrates the creative ways that children’s hospitals can partner with their local school districts to improve children’s health.
