This presentation is an introductory component of a special session which examine different aspects of the Redes En Accion Program, a 5 year, NCI funded project to promote cancer awareness, training and research among and for Hispanics. This presentation by the PI of the project, will briefly present an overview of the goals and objectives of the Redes En Accion Program. It will follow with explicit details of the Year 2 accomplishments, organized into 1) network/infrastructure development (newsletters, website, partnerships, etc.), 2) research activities (pilot projects and other research efforts), 3) training activities (trainee and mentorship experiences), and 4) public awareness (overview of the Redes national media campaign which launched in 11/01). Plans for Year 3 will also be included. Three other presentations will expand on aspects of each of the 3 main foci of the Redes En Accion program with examples of research, training and awareness activities. The research presentation by Greg Talavera, MD, will review the results of a national survey of Hispanic physicians. Training will be covered by Debra Para-Medina, Dr.PH., who will provide an overview of her recently funded Redes En Accion pilot project, “South Carolina Partnership for Cancer Prevention (SCPCP) Project”. Public awareness will examine the development and effects of the Year 2 Redes En Accion mass media campaign which focused on clinical trial recruitment among Hispanics.
