The low threshold model uses a ‘stages of engagement’ approach by using concrete services such as meals and showers to begin the engagement process. As trust builds, clients become progressively involved in more demanding treatment and service options. This study analyzes the low threshold model of care used at a drop-in center for homeless and runaway youth as described by project staff, and examines characteristics of clients as provided by intake assessments. A total of 437 intakes conducted between 3/1/01 and 12/1/01 are included. The sample consisted of 137 females and 300 males, ages 13 to 23 (mean=19.8). A subsample (n=45) also completed a service interview that provides more extensive data on previous experiences with services, including self-reported barriers to services. The services most frequently requested by youth were food, shelter, showers, and permanent housing. The services least requested included HIV education, HIV testing, and birth control/condoms, a notable finding due to the high rates of risk behavior reported by the sample. Despite a high need profile, few youth have attempted to access services through existing service agencies or health providers. Findings provide important information for providers working with and/or planning programs for homeless and runaway youth.
