Abstract Introduction: Associations between ND and cocaine or opiate use have been little examined. The detection of such associations could clarify those factors that influence both ND and other substance abuse. Methods: Correlations between ND and cocaine and opiate use were examined using a sample of 298 men and women. Smoking was measured using three scales: the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), the Tobacco Dependence Screener (TDS), and the Questionnaire of Smoking Urges (QSU). Both cocaine and opiate use were measured as the number of times within the last 30 days the respondent had used drugs belonging to either category. Results: Cocaine use was significantly correlated (p < .05) with attempting to quite smoking (r=.13); somatic symptoms accompanying trying to quite smoking (r=.17); self-perceived dependency on tobacco (r=.16); and the total QSU score (r=.19). Opiate use was not significantly correlated with any of the tobacco items or the total QSU score. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that there is a relation between nicotine dependence and cocaine use. Thus, treatment programs concerned with cocaine use should also assist with smoking cessation.
