More than 80,000 Chinese Americans live in Houston. Culturally appropriate breast cancer education programs that target Chinese women are needed due to the ineffectiveness of mainstream programs in reaching this group. The goal of the proposed project is to design, implement and evaluate culturally appropriate breast cancer education programs for Chinese women ages 40 and older living in low-income “Chinatown” areas of Houston. The program has three components: outreach, peer-led small education groups, and a publicity/media campaign. Media/publicity components include newspapers, monthly newsletters, television, radio broadcasting, flyers, posters, etc. The aims of the media/publicity campaign are to spread an awareness of the program and establish its legitimacy, invite Chinese women to become involved with the program, and provide a continual reminder of the importance of breast cancer screening within the Chinese Community. This presentation will discuss an overview of media/publicity components of the project, focusing on the barriers of implementing the media campaign and strategies for overcoming these barriers.
