Abstract #40643

TransHealth: Transgender/Transsexual Health Activists Discuss the Future

Emilia Lombardi, PhD, UCLA ISAP, UCLA, 11050 Santa Monica Blvd. Suite 200, Los Angeles, CA 90025, N/A, elomb@ucla.edu

Emilia Lombardi, Ph.D. Emilia received her doctorate in sociology at the University of Akron, Ohio in 1997. She is currently the principal investigator of a NIDA funded study examining the substance use and substance use treatment experiences of transgender/transsexual men and women (1 R03 DA12909-01A1). She also has recently taken the position of Principal Investigator for the Orange County Gay and Lesbian Center's LGBT Tobacco Project. My current work examines trans-health issues as a part of larger society. That trans-health involves more then just the individual or even just the medical system alone. Trans-health encompasses the intersection between the individual, medical, socio-economic, and legal institutions. It is a context that contributes to the marginalization and invisibility of trans-people. Not offering services allows for society to not think of trans-people and the questions and issues they bring on the nature of gender, that the medical aspects of trans-health is very much related to the norms of gender that every person is influenced by and the legal institution that defines and reifies people’s gender. I wish to help develop strategies for all levels of institutions that will allow trans-people to have more control their lives.
