Project FUERTE recruits urban high school students (HSAs) and trains them to mentor and teach middle school students (MSS) about the dangers of tobacco and ways to prevent peer and other pressures to smoke. HSAs are required to participate in a series of tobacco use prevention training sessions followed by proficiency-testing for each of the six lessons they are required to deliver to MSSs and their families. All HSAs are evaluated by project staff during proficiency testing and are given up to three attempts to pass each lesson. HSAs also complete baseline measures and pre- and post-training knowledge tests. A total of 35 HSAs have completed all six proficiency training sessions and now meet with MSSs and their families. The topics for the lessons include information on: the dangers of tobacco, improving family communication, resisting peer pressure to smoke and refusing unwanted offers. The median age of participants was 15, 77% were female, and 90.3% were Hispanic. This paper will discuss the results of the HSAs training as it pertains to the number of attempts required to successfully complete proficiency testing, teaching evaluations of HSAs, results of changes in training related outcomes, and logistical improvements required to decrease HSA and staff time burden related to proficiency testing.
