To create an Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities in an academic setting that will function collaboratively with public health agencies and the public, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) placed its center in the UMDNJ- School of Public Health (UMDNJ/RU/NJIT). The Steering Committee charged to develop a strategic plan was composed of members of the UMDNJ faculty and staff ; federal, state and local government public health officials; and representatives of community groups. The goals for the Institute reflect a commitment to making public health agencies and the public partners in this effort. Specifically, the goals are to promote community-based research; to increase the number of minority health professionals; to provide public and professional information on health disparities; to establish strategic relationships both within and external to the University; to establish health policies; to develop the organization to support the mission; and to promote the Institute. Community Advisory Committees will further reinforce the direction and operation of the Institute by bringing community needs to the staff's attention and by assisting staff in delivering public education and information. As the products of this Institute demonstrate effective interventions to eliminate health disparities, the results will be used to improve health policy in the state and nation and to strengthen the public health workforce.
