Their passion to improve the health status of their communities is motivated by personal and humanitarian reasons. Since 1992, community residents trained as CHAs have been improving the quality of life for many Montgomery County, Ohio residents. Their training as a generalist with completion of modules on specific community health topics has prepared them to work in many areas of public health. The CHAs contributions to improving public health have earned them opportunities to provide outreach and follow-up for many community health initiatives. The federally mandated outreach for the Healthy Start/Healthy Families Medicaid program is one of these programs. Their efforts in this program have produced a 30% increase in children receiving health care. In addition to working collaboratively with Jobs and Family Service Center, local hospitals and referral agency, the CHAs work with many other local health and social service providers improving outcomes for other community health programs including, Lead Poisoning Prevention and Cancer Early Detection.
