In many countries, nurses play a major role in protecting the health of the public and in the delivery of primary care; in all countries they are an integral part of the healthcare workforce. Shortages in the nursing workforce and other health professions are becoming a significant problem in the international community. Sustaining a vital and productive nursing workforce is a topic of global importance. International nursing experts and health planners from 62 countries met in Atlanta, Georgia, October 15-19, 2001, for the Global Nursing Partnerships conference to tackle the global nursing workforce crisis. The first ever meeting of this type, Chief Nursing Officers (CNO), National Nursing Association (NNA) Presidents and Governmental Human Resource Officials, largely from the developing world, met to discuss collaboration skills and consider partnership approaches. During the final two days of the conference, held at the Carter Center, international leaders outlined strategies for solving the workforce crisis and delegates built action plans for their own countries. Country representatives devised strategic plans specific to their own workforce issues, including nursing representation on health policy committees, standardizing nursing education both for basic preparation and continuing education, developing program to meet nation’s health needs and defining parameters for national workforce databases. Outcomes of the conference and next steps will be outlined in this presentation.
