The US Surgeon General has called upon health professions schools to be key partners in achieving the Healthy People 2010 goals and objectives. Potential strategies for achieving the national health objectives include improving student understanding of health promotion content and translating this new knowledge through community service activities. Community-based curriculuar innovations, including service-learning offer a logical opportunity to expand the health promotion content of health professions curricula, develop meaningful community partnerships, and address the Healthy People 2010 Objectives. In an effort to provide health professions faculty with support to expand the health promotion content of their curriculum, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH)’s has produced a Healthy People 2010 Curriculum Planning Guide. This curriculum planning guide addresses eight essential units that inform the planning process for designing community-based courses that meet the Healthy People 2010 Objectives. Participants in this session will be able to 1) describe a curriculum development guide that provides a framework for educators to use as they develop community-based experiences that are tied to the Healthy People 2010 objectives, 2) analyze program models that apply service-learning as a curriculum strategy for achieving the Healthy People 2010 objectives, and 3) construct interactive exercises aimed at demonstrating how the guide can be used to develop actual courses.
