Chronic Illness has emerged as a major public health issue in Europe. Consumer choice is becoming a key long term care policy response to the increasing prevalence of chronic illness in the aged and adult disabled population in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria.

The issue of cognitive impairment will be discussed in the context of informed consent and control over resources. The issue of compensating family care will be addressed as well.

Learning Objectives:

• At the conclusion of the presentation, the participant should be able to demonstrate knowledge of consumer choice in chronic care for the elderly in Holland, Germany, and Austria. The participant should also be able to ascertain whether a long standing commitment to consumer models has resulted in greater funding for home and community care.
