Women with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse problems and a history of trauma (physical and/or sexual abuse) represent a vexing service coordination problem among human service agencies. While service coordination efforts have begun to appear among mental health and substance abuse agencies, all three service domains are rarely provided for or coordinated with one another very effectively. Often, women with all three needs receive only partial care or fragmented care to address the range of treatment that is necessary for recovery. This project seeks to assess clinical services integration in a 9-site demonstration program sponsored by the Centers for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Mental Health Services (CMHS), and Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) that explicitly attempts to integrate mental health, substance abuse, and trauma services. Clinical services integration in this demonstration project has consisted of the cross training of trauma group leaders and case managers to understand, address, and raise issues related to the concomitant behavioral health problems associated with trauma survival. Data measuring clinical services integration will be presented from a telephone survey of case managers and trauma group leaders (N=80) describing their backgrounds, training experiences, what they do, and how they do it. Discussion will highlight the relevance of the cross-training approach to their day-to-day job performance, the salience of the integrated approach for trauma survivors, and the applicability of the measures for other population groups.
