Abstract #41648

Impact of Census 2000 Long Form Data on API Health Status Indicators

Gem Daus, MA, Policy Division, APIAHF, 1001 Connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 835, Washington, DC 20036, 202-624-0007, gdaus@apiahf.org

Many datasets are only one or two degrees of separation from Census data. Therefore, as new Census 2000 data are released, it is important to assess its impact on future research and policymaking, and on characterizations of API health status.

Data from the long-form of Census 2000 will be released starting June 2002. These data will include income, poverty, educational attainment, primary language, disability, occupation and use of public benefits. These data will be available for 17 Asian populations and 12 Pacific Islander populations. Population and household counts for these populations are already available.

Of particular interest will be the counts and characteristics of multi-race and multi-ethnic populations. Multirace populations will increase the complexity of defining a study population by increasing the number of possible denominators to use in calculations of prevalence, incidence and other population-based rates. Whether those differences are significant remains to be seen.
