Abstract #42410

Providing Access to breast health screening for Women with disabilities: Eliminating barriers

flora Maiki, MA-, Breast Health Access for Women with Disabilities: Rehabilitation Dept., Alta Bates Medical Center, 2001 Dwight Way, Berkeley, CA 94704, 510-204 4522, maikif@sutterhealth.org

Breast Health Access for Women with Disabilities (BHAWD)was founded in 1995 in response to the lack of access to breast health care for women with disabilities. The first program of its kind, BHAWD has improved access to breast health care and specialized breast services for women with disabilities. Women with disabilities are no less susceptible to breast cancer than able-bodied women and, in fact, may have higher risk factors. Women with disabilities receive fewer breast exams and mammograms and are at increased risk for delay in diagnosis. Barriers to breast health care for women with disabilities include physical barriers, attitudinal barriers and individual functional limitations. BHAWD was created from a partnership of community-based disability organizations, consumers and medical providers committed to eliminate these barriers through community outreach, education and policy.
