This presentation will describe ethical considerations in measuring STD outcomes during research with African American adolescents. The content will be based on the authors’ extensive experience measuring STD’s as an outcome variable in randomized, controlled trials of HIV/STD prevention curricula. The paper will convey the rationale for measuring biological outcomes with this population and for developing a detailed and well-informed research protocol for collection of biological samples. The following aspects of the protocol will be emphasized: a) clear, informative and respectful communication and consent procedures, b) confidentiality considerations, and c) procedures for collecting samples, giving test results, and delivering effective treatment. Finally, the authors will describe ways to successfully collaborate with participants and their parents, as well as with physicians and other clinical and laboratory personnel, in order to develop procedures that best respect and protect the interests of African American adolescents.
