Take Action! was introduced on the web in January 2001 and developed for online use by The Physical Activity and Health Initiative (PAHI) It was adapted from the CDC Director’s Physical Activity Challenge. California was one of 14 state health departments, which participated, in the National Coalition for Physical Activity’s pilot testing of the Challenge in 1998, when the name was changed to March into May. PAHI a program of the University of California San Francisco on contract with the California Department of Health Services formed the California Health Promotion Collaborative (CHPC). The CHPC, an affiliation of local employee health promotion organizations partnered with PAHI to release and present Take Action! as a resource and a tool available to all California employers. The website www.ca-takeaction.com serves not only to disseminate the program but a virtual meeting place for health promotion professionals. In 2001 over 30 California employers implemented Take Action. Plans for 2002 include training, incentives and mini grants to increase participation and data collection.
