Elizabeth W. Jackson, Division of Health Promotion Statistics, CDC/NCHS, 6525 Belcrest Road, Room 770, Hyattsville, MD 20782, 301.458.4288, emw6@cdc.gov

Extensive progress has been made in reducing deaths from and risk factors for heart disease and stroke in the 20th century, yet heart disease and stroke remain the first and third leading causes of death respectively in the U.S. Healthy People 2010, the national prevention initiative for the next decade, identifies 16 heart disease and stroke objectives with quantifiable targets set for individuals, medical practitioners, and institutions.

This paper provides an overview of the Healthy People 2010 Heart Disease and Stroke focus area as well as the data and data issues related to tracking individual objectives. While still early in the decade, trend analysis of specific objectives will be presented. Disparities among the sexes, and racial and ethnic groups will be addressed. A discussion of the difficulties that arise as a result of changes in data definitions and measurement will also be introduced.
