March Into May - Maine

In 1998 Maine’s Health Department served as one of fourteen health department pilot sites for the adaption and diffusion of the CDC’s Physical Activity Challenge which was renamed March into May by in the National Coalition for Physical Activity NCPPA. March Into May was introduced to Portland in 1999 and a planning committee was formed to disseminate the intervention to city work sites. The planning committee, lead by the Public Health Division of Health and Human Services Department of the City of Portland consists of representatives from the local University, insurance agencies, a trails organization, American Heart Association, a newspaper, our Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and other health agencies. In 1999, fifteen companies participated in MIM with 1,400 participants and 38% completing program. In 2000, thirty companies participated with 1,700 participants and 39% completing program. In 2001 thirty companies participated wit h4,700 participants and 45% completing the program. In 2002 the plans are to implement MIM statewide, with 51 companies all ready signed up.
