Jeffry Rohacek, MA, CASAC, McPike Addiction Treatment Center, 1213 Court St., Utica, NY 13502, 315-797-6800 x4860, JeffRohacek@oasas.state.ny.us

The New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services and the New York State Office of Mental Health (represented by McPike Addiction Treatment Center and Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center) have developed and implemented an integrated approach to the treatment of individuals who are dually-diagnosed with addiction and mental health issues.

In August of 1998, McPike ATC and MVPC developed the Integrated Dual Recovery Program to provide treatment services to dually-diagnosed patients of both facilities and to the community consumers. This integrated approach involves staff from both facilities providing treatment in a collaborative fashion, cross training of staff to increase knowledge and skills in both addictions and mental health, and a shared philosophical perspective regarding the interrelationship of chemical dependency and mental health issues as the cornerstone in the provision of treatment services. At present, the Integrated Dual Recovery Program is the only inpatient treatment program in New York State that is truly integrated with mental health and addictions professionals working collaboratively to provide services to individual who are dually diagnosed.

The Integrated Dual Recovery Program utilizes a holistic approach which includes screening and assessment, orientation, individualized treatment planning, and case management, Through an interdisciplinary treatment team approach patients learn to manage psychiatric symptoms, and develop and practice effective sobriety-enhancing and emotional coping skills. Patients are involved in a 12 Step approach which includes both ‘traditional’ AA and ‘Dual Recovery’ AA meetings, education regarding chemical dependency and psychiatric disorders, dual recovery group therapy, goal-setting and continuing care planning .
